The 1980s

Allegedly, Katie Holmes as a young girl looks up to Tom Cruise as her idol and favorite actor.

October 2004

Seventeen magazine features an interview with Katie Holmes, who at this time had never met Tom Cruise. In the interview, she says, “I think every little girl dreams about (her wedding). I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise.”

April 11, 2005

As of this day, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise had never met in person.

Mid-April 2005

Katie Holmes flies to Los Angeles to meet with Tom Cruise regarding a role she wished to have in “Mission: Impossible 3”. At this same time, she fires both her agent and her manager (John Carrabino) of several years. Katie begins hanging out with Jessica Feshbach, whose family has donated millions of dollars to Scientology and even operate a Scientology center in Florida.

April 27, 2005

Holmes and Cruise make first public appearance together as a couple in Rome, where Cruise was to receive a lifetime achievement award (at the David di Donatello Awards) on April 29. People begin suspecting the relationship is merely a publicity stunt to push the movies “War of the Worlds” and “Batman Begins”. While the claim is made they had been dating “for weeks” there was no way to validate that and many people disputed this. Cruise would not say how he met Holmes. He did say this: “She’s such an extraordinary woman. It’s beautiful. I feel really happy. I’m more than enamored.”

May 23, 2005

Tom Cruise appears on the Oprah Winfrey show. After acting like a complete idiot (Cruise punched the floor, jumped in his chair, wrestled with Oprah and other silly stunts), he drags Katie Holmes from backstage and brings her in on the insanity. Cruise said, “”I can’t be cool, I can’t be laid back. I want to celebrate her, she’s a very special woman.” Oprah and her audience love the action, while Dane Cook prepares a way to make fun of the event.

June 9, 2005

Katie Holmes appears on the MTV Movie Awards.

June 13, 2005

Katie announces she’s converting from Roman Catholicism to Scientology.

June 16, 2005

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise announce they are engaged to be married after less than two months together. Cruise proposed to Holmes on the Eiffel Tower about 12:30a.m. after a late night dinner at Le Jules Verne restaurant (on the second floor of the tower). “Today is a magnificent day for me, I’m engaged to a magnificent woman. It’s Paris, it’s a beautiful city, it’s very romantic.” Tom did not get down on one knee, but he did have the ring ready (which he says he’s “had … for some time”) and those who have seen it claim it is a yellow diamond. Later reports say it is a five carat diamond.

June 20, 2005

Steven Spielberg defends Tom Cruise. “I was a little upset. Not at Tom, but at the press for making such a big deal out of a kind of small thing. Tom lost his cool because he was deliriously happy, and now he was being punished for his public display of happiness. What Tom did on Oprah was exactly what Tom did with me when he first told me about Katie Holmes. But the press didn’t like the way Tom bared his soul.” Meanwhile, a poll suggests that 60% of people believe the relationship is nothing more than a publicity stunt.

June 21, 2005

Journalist Roger Friedman makes an interesting observation about Katie Holmes and her comments about childhood. Says Friedman, “Curiously, since the Cruise-Holmes situation popped up, we have heard over and over again that Cruise was the young actress’ idol when she was growing up. That’s certainly interesting because all of the publicity that used to run on Holmes – still found all over the Internet – lists another Tom as her favorite actor. That would be Tom Hanks.”

June 23, 2005

Tom Cruise appears on the David Letterman show. Letterman has a judge backstage ready to marry Holmes and Cruise at any moment if they decide to do so. Cruise calls this joke “classic Letterman”. A more subtle joke was Paul Schaffer and his orchestra playing Van Halen’s “Jump” while Cruise entered – poking fun at his wild antics from the Oprah Winfrey show. During the interview, Letterman said, “You go to Paris and the Eiffel Tower and all of that… That was a nice touch. You make the rest of us look like rubes, like we just rolled off a turnip truck.”

July 5, 2005

Cruise and Holmes appear together on The View.

July 11, 2005

Roger Friedman continues to worry about Katie Holmes and her change from being articulate into being a zombie. According to Friedman, Holmes is followed by devout Scientologist minder Jessica Feshbach Rodriguez everywhere she goes, and even gets advice over a walkie-talkie in the bathroom. He also worries that Holmes has referred to Rodriguez as her best friend, even after only knowing her six weeks.

July 12, 2005

The city of Paris bans Tom Cruise from ever being welcome again, because of his Scientology views. The city council voted “never to welcome Cruise, spokesman for Scientology and self-declared militant for this organisation”. Vatican City has also banned Cruise from filming “Mission: Impossible 3” there.

September 12, 2005

Entertainment Tonight reported an interview between Cruise and Jann Carl. Cruise said, “We don’t have a date yet. [But we have] big, big plans. We talk about it. I really didn’t know that there were so many wedding magazines. I said, ‘Are you kidding me? There are things for the flowers, the cake, the dresses’ … The thing that I love about Kate is that she’s an artist, so she actually loves ribbons and she makes cards and creates art. She loves flowers, and she’ll do her own floral arrangements. So it’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s going to be a celebration.” When asks about she feels about him doing his own stunts, Tom said, “That’s why I am marrying her, because she has no worries about that — none. She’s just fun and easy. She celebrates it. She loves it. We show her the cut footage [of my stunts] and she digs it. She’s just fun.”

September 19, 2005

This author, Gavin Schmitt, observes that if the entire thing is merely a publicity stunt, the act has gone too far. Both “War of the Worlds” and “Batman Begins” have left theaters and no further good can come from this relationship financially.

October 6, 2005

TomKat announced they were expecting a child, showing to the world Holmes’ very visible pregnancy.

April 18, 2006

The couple had a daughter, Suri. She was born at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. The media nicknames her “TomKitten”.

There was controversy surrounding the name “Suri”, and what the couple claimed was its meaning. The Times summarized the written statement Cruise released on the birth as saying the name “is a word with origins in both Hebrew and Persian. In Hebrew, it means ‘princess’ and in Persian, ‘red rose,’ it was claimed in the release.” However, magazines and blogs noted on Cruise’s mistranslation on Suri’s Hebrew meaning. In Hebrew, Suri actually means “from Syria”, not “princess”. The wrong etymology might stem from the fact that Suri is a Yiddish pet form of Sarah, which means “princess”. In Japanese, ‘suri’ means “pickpocket.”

November 18, 2006

Approximately seven months after Suri’s birth, the couple married in Bracciano, Italy.

Holmes wore a Giorgio Armani off-the-shoulder gown featuring an ivory silk train adorned with lace and Swarovski beaded crystals. She had on a tulle floor-length veil and silk shoes, and carried a bouquet of calla lilies. Cruise wore a navy-blue tuxedo from the Giorgio Armani Hand Made to Measure collection.

Among the stars attending the Scientology ceremony were Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith, Jim Carrey, Brooke Shields, Jenna Elfman, Victoria Beckham, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams.

There was some debate on the legality of the marriage. Bracciano Mayor Patrizia Riccioni said the couple had not taken out a marriage license. “As far as we know, we never received a request for a marriage license,” she said. “As far as Italian law is concerned, it is not a legal marriage.”

Representatives said the couple had “officialized their marriage in Los Angeles” before leaving for Italy. Cruise’s publicist, Arnold Robinson, told the Associated Press that “the required steps were taken for the marriage to be legal.”

November 19, 2006

The couple flies to the Maldives in the Indian Ocean for their Honeymoon.
